Don't Believe It, Macedonians Aren't Bulgarian

To the Editor:

A May 12 report that President Clinton was considering sending United States troops to Macedonia states: "Macedonia is home to about 2 million people; about a third are of Muslim Albanian descent and most of the rest are of Bulgarian origin." The majority of the population of Macedonia (67 percent) is ethnic Macedonians, not Bulgarians.

The Balkans, including Bulgaria and Macedonia were settled by Slavic tribes in the sixth century. Turkic Bulgars arrived in the seventh century, merged with the Slavs and became Christians by the ninth century. The Slavic tribes that settled in Macedonia merged with the native inhabitants, who were descendants of Alexander the Great. In the 10th century, Czar Samuel, from his royal court in the Prespa region of Macedonia, had several victories over Byantines, thus creating a kingdom from the Adriatic to the Black Sea, from the Danube River to the Aegean Sea.

According to the British historian R. G. D. Laffan, writing in "The Serbs" in 1917, when the Bulgarians foresaw the collapse of the Ottoman Empire in 1877, they carried out intensive propaganda, whose purpose was that "Macedonia must be shown to be Bulgarian in race, language, and sympathy." Even today, the Bulgarian Government is working hard to turn all Macedonians into Bulgarians, as it did during World War II.

"Fodor's 90 Yugoslavia" points out: "even certain physical characteristics seem to have withstood the traumas of history; compare the profiles, especially of some of the younger Macedonians, with classical busts of their forefathers in antiquity."

Macedonia : a True Endless Story ...

I remember a Macedonian peasant of Gostivar once saying: "When I was born I was named Nikola Popstefanija. That was under the Turks. Then the Bulgars came and I was forced to change my name to Nikola Popstefanoff. Then the Serbs came and I was named Nikola Popstefanovich. None of us cares much what happens here if we can only have peace." Once more Nikola will gave to change his name and once more Macedonia is being made to live up to its title of "bloody land."

Fish in the water

When Alexander’s General Krateros started off with the ten thousand-strong contingent of aging veterans back for Macedonia, he had parted from his commander at Patala (Hyderabad).

Three hundred and fifty kilometres northwest of Patala and some two weeks after the contingent of aging veterans bid farewell to Alexander, to head for Macedonia in the year 325 BCE, blasé veterans from years of hard travelling and even harder fighting, would have looked up in awe. There, spread out in front, was a large irregular splash of green, offsetting the bleak ochre of the mountains in the background.

As they neared, birdsong bursting out of the thickets would have been more than welcoming. Nearer still, the tinkle of rushing waters would have soothed the tired marchers. But Krateros would not have tarried long here for he had the Moola Pass to negotiate to the Baloch uplands before he could reach Alexandria in Arachosia (Kandahar). Neither Krateros nor any of his veterans left behind a record of what they saw and how they felt upon reaching this lovely oasis. Nor, too, did they tell us what it was called. But one thing that cannot be denied is that this army would have passed through Chhattal Shah, for there was no other way of ascending the Moola if you came from the low country of Sindh.

I followed up on Krateros over two thousand years later. Though my primary desire was to see what Krateros had seen all those years ago, we were also going to investigate the fish that no one could eat. Wali Mohammad, my friend from Shahdadkot, had told the tale: The fish were sacred of the saint Chhatal Shah Noorani and if you ate them, they came squirming out from the back end the next morning. Since everyone was afraid of this embarrassing development, they were not molested and the fish were completely tame and actually came into one’s hands, he said.

A vegetarian of sorts, I have never been able to resist fish and I thought this was a fish-eater’s paradise. The little stream was teeming with fish. And no ordinary rubbish, but mahasher fish. I do not know which family this fish belongs to, but whether from the Haro in the Potohar or from the Hub River or here at Chhattal Shah, there are few better fish to eat.

The stream led up to a large circular natural reservoir that was fed by a number of underground springs. The water was sparkling clear and abounding with more mahasher. Only their size was much larger than the ones we had seen in the stream. My mouth watered and as I went to the water’s edge to get lunch, the fish slithered away.

I ragged my friend about the lousy story. I carried on as we sat down in the dappled shade of banyan and pipal trees to await the cup of tea the keeper of the shrine offered us. I was still ranting when tea arrived. The elderly keeper listened to me raving on and on. How could fish emerge from the eater’s sphincter I asked him.

What this wise old man said knocked me over. “Saeen, if there had been no story, these wild hill people would have eaten off these fish. This would have been a dead stream.” Then he told me to go back to the water and see how the fish glistened as they swam about in the dappled light.

I went back to the rill and sat by its side. The cavorting fish did indeed flash different colours: Iridescent green, orange and blue. As I sat there contemplating this beauty, it suddenly dawned upon me that the fish story was no foolish quasi-religious rubbish. This was one of the earliest; perhaps even the earliest, conservation programmes that have been in force for centuries.

...It is thought here there the position of the Macedonians has been greatly strengthened by the simultaneous disturbances In Armenia, as It Is considered that the latter movement is more likely to attract sympathy from Europe and lead to a consideration of the whole situation in the Turkish Empire...

Did Alexander die from drink?

DID ALEXANDER THE GREAT DIE FROM DRINK?

I have heard that Lord Eldon, who died at the age of 87, and who certainly suffered neither "downfall" nor "ruin," was accustomed to drink a bottle of port wine after his dinner every day, except on Sundays, when his brother, Lord Stowell, dined with him, and they each drank two.

Macedonians Will Rise

Bulgaria have decided, according: to a special dispatches from Sofia to the Vossiche Zeitungr, to begin an insurrection April 1. Gen. Michaikowsky, President of the Macedonian Central Committee, recently, assembled thirty representatives of the Macedonian provincial organizations and various other influential revolutionists and submitted to them a report of the results of his visits to Vienna, Paris and London.

At each place he was told that revolution and diplomacy must run parallel. Let the Macedonians first strike for their own independence and diplomacy might help j later. He advised a rising April 1 and the s meeting clamorously supported the proposition.

Boris Sarafoff, the Macedonian leader and former President of the Committee, is also recruiting for an invasion of Macedonia.

The Macedonian Rising

THE MACEDONIAN RISING.

LONDON, Oct. 10.—Conflicting: reports have been received in London as to the situation in Macedonia. Reliable correspondents who have visited Salonika give varying accounts, some to the effect that the rebellion is not important, while others the correspondent in Athens of The Standard, for example, say that the situation is very grave and that people possessing any considerable wealth are leaving the country.
In Vienna there is a tendency to minimize the seriousness of the revolutionary outbreak. It is asserted there that the two opposing Macedonian committees are neutralizing each other and that the movement will soon die of inanition, provided Turkey effectually guards all the mountain passes. It Is alleged that the Sarafof committee has ordered the cessation of the insurrectionary movement on the ground that the moment is not favorable for a successful rebellion.
A special edition of The Reformer, the organ of M. Zontcheff, President of the Macedonian Committee, published in Sofia, describes desperate fighting. The insurgents of Melnik, it is said, have occupied the Krisna defile on the Bulgarian frontier, whence the Turks are unable to dislodge them. Many men on both sides were killed in the fighting there. The Turks have burned the village of Geleznitsa, and there has been serious fighting between Turkish troops and 400 insurgents near Monastir.

Insists on Keeping Name Macedonia

New Nation Insists on Keeping Name 'Macedonia'

By JOHN F. BURNS,

Published: May 7, 1992

The New York Times

BELGRADE, Yugoslavia, May 6— The former Yugoslav republic of Macedonia, denied recognition by the 12-nation European Community and by the United States because of a dispute with Greece over its name, has rejected new pressure to compromise.

Greece says the name Macedonia belongs exclusively to the Greek province of that name, which is adjacent to the mainly Slavic republic of Macedonia that was part of Yugoslavia from the end of World War II until its declaration of independence last year.

But at a European Community meeting in Brussels today, President Kiro Gligorov of the Macedonian republic again rejected any compromise, saying, "We have been bearing our name of Macedonia for centuries."

Officials at the meeting discussed ways to end the civil war in what was formerly the Yugoslav federation of six republics, but the talks adjourned without initiatives.

European Community foreign ministers meeting in Portugal on Saturday decided to withhold recognition until Greece and the republic agree on the issue of its name.

Greece has made a major issue of the dispute, saying the Government in Skopje, the capital of the republic, is attempting to appropriate the glories of ancient Macedonia, birthplace of Aristotle and Alexander the Great, and to lay the groundwork for future territorial claims on Greece.

Many of Greece's partners in the European Community, as well as United States officials involved in the diplomatic maneuvering on the issue, have dismissed claims that recognition of "Macedonia" threatens Greek security.

The underlying reason for Greece's insistence lies in bitter history, notably the Greek civil war in 1946-49, when Greek Communists based in Yugoslavia promised to deliver the province of Macedonia to a Balkan federation of Yugoslavia and Bulgaria.

In Skopje, officials contacted by telephone explained why they would not accept a European Community proposal to use the name the Slavic Republic of Macedonia: only 64 percent of the two million residents are Slavic; 21 percent are ethnic Albanians and nearly 5 percent are ethnic Turks.

In any case, the officials said, Greece has refused to accept any name that includes Macedonia, suggesting instead the name Republic of Skopje.

Saso Ordanoski, assistant editor of Plus, a weekly newsmagazine in Skopje, said Mr. Gligorov's stand on the name appeared to have widespread public support. Last week, the Government introduced its own currency, the denar, convertible one-for-one with Yugoslav dinars, and Mr. Ordanoski said that the change had gone smoothly.

Greece has an ally in Serbia, the dominant partner in the truncated Yugoslav federation with Montenegro that Serbia proclaimed last week, which has maintained a partial trade embargo on the republic, mainly on food items.

Greece has made extensive use of embargos against the Skopje Government, blocking oil, food and other supplies for Macedonia.

Mischief in Macedonia

Mischief in Macedonia

Published: March 8, 1994

The New York Times

Even as glimmers of peace appear in Bosnia, Greece is fueling tensions in another former Yugoslav republic, Macedonia, by imposing a strangling economic blockade. Greece's Western allies understand that Athens has had serious problems with Macedonia in the past. But they are losing patience with Greece's bullying tactics against a much weaker neighbor already suffering ethnic tensions.

Ancient Macedonia was the homeland of Alexander the Great. Modern Macedonia was, for most of this century, part Greek, part Yugoslav. During the Greek civil war of the late 1940's, Yugoslavia allied itself with the losing Communist side, and at one point Marshal Tito tried to assert his authority over all of Macedonia. Greece, not yet a NATO member and threatened by what seemed to be global Communism, was traumatized.

But today the roles are reversed. Greece, which currently holds the presidency of the European Union, is now protected by NATO. The new Republic of Macedonia, set adrift by Yugoslavia's collapse, is a political orphan and a military cipher, desperately trying to avoid being sucked into the wars of its neighbors. With tensions rising between its Slavic majority and its Albanian minority, Macedonia has worked hard to maintain civil peace.

But Macedonia has no outlet to the sea, leaving its economy hostage to the policies of its neighbors. To the north lies Serbia, whose nationalists openly seek to annex Macedonia as "South Serbia." To the south lies Greece, which has worked itself into a rage because the new republic insists on keeping the name it was known by in the Yugoslav federation -- the Republic of Macedonia. Greeks claim that this name, as well as Macedonia's flag and Constitution, somehow implies a revival of Tito's claim to Greek Macedonia.

Three weeks ago Greece closed off Macedonia's trade lifeline through the Greek port of Salonika, in defiance of all normal rules of peacetime commerce. Greece's European Union partners were outraged and resorted to unusual public criticism. So did Washington. The U.N. is trying to promote negotiations between Greece and Macedonia, but Greece demands concessions first, and maintains its trade blockade.

Until recently, both Europe and the U.S. tried to indulge Greek antipathy to Macedonia. But Athens's latest threat to commerce and its invitation to a wider Balkan war go too far. Greece is a valued ally, but it needs to be told firmly, by its friends, that its tactics on Macedonia are dangerously wrong.

THE MACEDONIAN-AGITATION.

All the Leading Members of the Committee Arrested in Sofia and Their Meeting Place Closed.

SOFIA, April 6.—All the leading members of the Macedonian Committee here, including: Sarafoff, were arrested last night.
The building in which the committee met has been seated up.
The revolutionary movement among the Macedonians is the indirect result of the war between Turkey and Greece. The Macedonians, finding that the revolution in Crete was at least partially successful, determined to engage in active measures to secure their own independence, and their j proceedings have recently been viewer with the greatest alarm by the powers.
It is said that only the action of Russia, Austria, and Great Britain has prevented an outbreak in Macedonia. The gravity of the situation has been increased by the fact that the majority of the people of Bulgaria, the capital of which country' is the headquarters of the committee, are deeply sympathetic with the movement, and have been supplying the Macedonians with arms and ammunition. The Bulgarian Government has taken various measures to check the work of the committee, but Prince Ferdinand and his advisers apparently hesitated to take a firm stand until the arrest's on Friday. It was openly said that the Bulgarian authorities did not dare to suppress the committee, but this claim is now shown to have been boastful.
The Turkish forces in Macedonia and along the Bulgarian frontier have recently been greatly increased, and there have been unverified rumors of terrible atrocities on the part of the Turkish soldiery.
The objects of the Macedonian Committee, as stated in a memorial to the powers issued in January, 1899, are as follows:
The formation of a province, with Salonika as the capital, and comprising the already existing: Vilayets of Salonika, Monastir, and Uskub.
The nomination as Governor General for five years of a person belonging to the predominant nationality of the province.
The formation of a General Assembly composed of representatives elected directly by the people.
The guarantee of personal liberty and inviolability of domicile for all the inhabitants of the province without distinction. Suppression or the press censorship.
All officials to be chosen from among the seotion of the population predominating in the locality of their service.
The recognition of the principal languages of the province on the same rooting as the Turkish language.
The different Christian nationalities to organize their own schools.
General amnesty for all political prisoners and migrants.
Identical reforms in the Vilayet of Adrianople.
M. Sarafoff, one of those arrested on Friday night, is apaprently the new Bulgarian Minister of the Interior. It is said that he is an ex-President of the Macedonian Committee. The arrest of the members of the committee is even more in the nature of a surprise than it would have been three months ago, as it was expected that the new Ministry would deal very leniently with them. The Vecherna Pochta, the principal organ of the committee, hailed with delight the appointment of the new Cabinet.
