EXPLORING PESHNA CAVE AND THE FORTRESS BUILT, ACCORDING TO LEGEND, BY THE 14TH-CENTURY KING MARKO FOR HIS SISTER, MAKEDONSKI BROD, MACEDONIA, JULY 6, 2007
Alek Gavrilovski, 20, from Skopje, Macedonia, on summer break from his studies at the Georgia Institute of Technology in Atlanta. “I’ve studied in the States for three years, and pretty much every summer I go back to Macedonia. I’ve traveled the world, and I’ve never really taken a good look at my own country as much as I am now. I’d never been to the Peshna Cave; I’d only heard about it. The castle’s actually built inside. It looks exactly like Helm’s Deep from ‘Lord of the Rings.’ It’s kind of sad to compare it to that — but it’s actually incredible when there’s something you’ve seen from somebody’s fantasy, and then you see this and it’s almost exactly the same.” As told to Austin Considine
