The Register 9 February 1903

CRIES FROM MACEDONIA.

TURKISH ATROCITIES. MILITARY PREPARATIONS. ; Russian Activity.

London February 6.

It would appear that, instead of inaugurating the promised reforms in Macedonia, the Turkish Government is permitting a renewal of the atrocities which first called forth the indignant protests of the Powers. Refugees from 36 villages narrate horrible stories of tortures, robberies, and violations committed by Turkish soldiery upon the virtually helpless Christians.

London, February 7.

The Sultan is preparing in the approved brutal Turkish fashion to crush the revolutionary movement in Macedonia- by means of the ruthless use of weapons of war. Although there are already vast bodies of troops in the disaffected districts His Majesty is arranging to dispatch considerable reinforcements to Anatolia and Macedonia, and has enquired of the Mahsusseh Shipping Company concerning what steamers are available for transport purposes. Advices from Odessa state that the Russian Government is also making enquiries for steamers that may be used troop ships.
